Moving and Packing Tips for NEPA Homeowners (Learned From Hundreds of Moves)

Purge before you pack — not while you pack
The single biggest mistake we see is packing first and sorting later. Every box you fill with stuff you do not want costs you twice: once to move it, once to deal with it at the new place. Go room by room a few weeks out with three piles — keep, donate, toss. NEPA has plenty of donation outlets, and most boroughs run bulk pickup days if you check with your municipality. Families clearing out longtime homes in Kingston and Dunmore tell us the purge took longer than the packing — plan for that, especially with a house that has thirty years of attic in it. This goes double for inherited houses, where the sorting is emotional as well as physical.
Buy better boxes than you think you need
Here is a NEPA-specific tip that sounds odd until you have lived it: our humidity is hard on cardboard. Boxes stored in a damp basement or garage — which is where everyone stages them — absorb moisture and lose a surprising amount of their strength. A single-wall box that felt sturdy in July can sag and split by the time it is loaded in a drizzle. Spend the extra few dollars on double-wall boxes for anything heavy — books, dishes, tools — and keep packed boxes off concrete floors on a pallet or scrap plywood. Tape the bottom seams twice. It is cheap insurance against your grandmother's dishes meeting the driveway.
Label like the person unloading is a stranger
Because they might be. Label every box on the top and at least one side with the destination room and a few words about contents — not just where it came from. A box marked KITCHEN - everyday dishes gets unloaded to the right spot by any mover, friend, or teenager without a single question. Number your boxes and keep a running list on your phone; when you are wondering where the coffee maker went at 7 a.m. in the new house, that list pays for itself. Pack a first-night box with meds, chargers, toilet paper, towels, and a change of clothes, and carry it in your own car.
Book movers off-peak and save real money
Moving companies across Luzerne and Lackawanna counties are slammed at month-end, on weekends, and all summer. Book a mid-week, mid-month date in the off-season and you will often get better rates and a crew that is not on its third job of the day. Get quotes from two or three companies, confirm they are insured, and ask what is extra — stairs, long carries, and pianos usually are. One local wrinkle: if you are moving out of a hillside neighborhood in Clarks Summit or a tight street in Exeter, tell the movers about parking and access up front so the truck they send actually fits.
The option nobody tells you about: leave the rest
Now the part we know best. If you are selling the traditional way, the house has to be broom-clean and empty — every closet, the attic, the garage, the shed. For a lot of people, especially anyone clearing a longtime family home or wrapping up a rental, that cleanout is the hardest part of the whole move.
